Awards and Honors
Peter J. Bickel, professor and chair of statistics, has been elected to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences as a Foreign Member, in recognition of his outstanding academic work.
Bruce Bolt, professor emeritus of geology and geophysics, presented this year's Mallet-Milne Lecture sponsored by the Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics in London. The annual lecture honors the two principal founders of seismology and earthquake engineering.
Candace Falk, editor and director of the Emma Goldman Papers, is the 1995 winner of the Barbara Penny Kanner Award sponsored by Stanford's Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Falk was honored specifically for the publication "Emma Goldman: A Guide to Her Life and Documentary Sources." The Stanford group calls the publication "the perfect work for Barbara Penny Kanner's desire to reward the results of bibliographers who practice biblio-methodology and who use critical tools of the historian's craft."
Leon A. Henkin, professor emeritus of mathematics, and Chancellor Tien were among the recipients of honorary degrees from the University of Illinois at Chicago, conferred by UI Chancellor James Stikel at a recent dinner hosted by Stikel and the University of Illinois Alumni Association.
George G. Judge, professor emeritus, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, is a newly elected fellow of the American Agricultural Economics Association. Judge is recognized as an international scholar who has contributed significantly to the economics field within his specialty of theoretical and applied econometrics. His econometric textbooks have provided the common knowledge to a generation of econometric practitioners throughout the world.
John Rowe, professor emeritus of anthropology, has been elected a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute in recognition of his "profound scholarly" achievements in Andean research.
K.S. Spiegler, professor of mechanical engineering, is the recipient of the 1995 Achievement Award presented by the International Desalination Association. The IDA cites Spiegler's "profound influence on the science and engineering of desalination," resulting from fundamental studies on the application of non-equilibrium thermodynamics to membrane transport.
Chancellor Tien and actor George Takei, Mr. Sulu of "Star Trek" fame, are co-winners of the 1995 Outstanding Citizen Achievement Awards presented by the Organization of Chinese Americans, Inc. The award is given to U.S. citizens "who have displayed tremendous achievement, leadership and community service."
"It is most fitting that we honor two such outstanding individuals for their community involvement," said Michael C. Lin, the group's president.
Tien serves on the Organization of Chinese Americans' national advisory council.
Robert Wilensky, professor and chair of the computer science division, received a $40,000 Research Partnership Award from IBM. The funds will support a joint research project with IBM on digital libraries storage. The award supplements an all-equipment grant for tape libraries that IBM currently is pursuing with the Department of Electrical Engineeering and Computer Sciences

Skills Seminar for Analysts

Follow the analytic process and practice skills through case studies, exercises and discussions. Participants will define and analyze a problem and apply the analytic process and tools to a workplace situation.
Volunteer Tutors Needed
The CALS Project, a tutoring program offered free to campus employees, is seeking volunteers. No prior tutoring experience is needed. Tutors will work one-on-one with employees who seek help to improve their writing, speaking, reading and basic math skills. Noontime tutoring sessions will begin Oct. 9.
