All-Star Lineup for Berkeley Jazz Fest
An all-star lineup of musicians will enliven the first annual Berkeley Jazz Festival on Sunday, Oct. 8, from noon to 6 p.m. The free outdoor event, co-sponsored by the University Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, will be staged at the intersection of Durant and Bowditch.
The festival, which will recall the days of the fabled but now defunct UC Berkeley Jazz Festival, will feature pianoman Ed Kelly, drummer Eddie Marshall, guitarist Calvin Keys, saxophonist John Handy, bassist Ron Belcher, jazz stylists Faye Carol and the Kito Gamble Trio and others.
Durant (between Telegrah and College) and Bowditch (between Bancroft and Channing) will be closed to traffic during the festival. Arts and crafts booths and food vendors will line Durant; and chairs, tables and umbrellas will be set up along Durant and Bowditch.
For more information, call the Telelgraph Area Association office, 649-9500.
Fraker Is New Dean
Harrison Fraker Jr. has been approved by the Regents as the new dean of the School of Environmental Design and will assume the job in January.
Fraker is currently dean of the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Minnesota, where over the past 10 years he played a major role in advancing its quality and reputation.
He and the faculty completely restructured the college's degree programs. They phased out the five-year professional degrees and developed broad-based liberal education undergraduate majors. In addition, they focused on graduate professional degrees and developed highly focused post-professional research degrees.
As a result of his leadership, the university upgraded the school from department to collegiate status and appointed Fraker the college's first dean in 1989.
A successful fund raiser, Fraker lead efforts to raise $4.6 million for four endowed chairs and has raised $3.9 million toward a $10.1 million endowment needed to start two new research centers.
He received his BA and MFA in architecture from Princeton. He is also a practicing architect.
