November Is Flu Shot Time

University Health Services has been providing a series of flu shot clinics for staff, faculty and students at the Tang Center. The last two will be held Wednesday, Nov. 8 and Thursday, Nov. 16, both from noon to 6 p.m. The cost is $7.50 and no appointment is necessary.

Health officials note that the flu shot is most effective if received in late October or early November to promote resistance before December's flu season arrives.

Among those who should consider a flu shot are people whose jobs entail high public contact, including staff on the front-lines with lots of student and public contact, and child and health care workers.

Autumn Food Drive

Now through Nov. 10, Loaves and Fishes is sponsoring a canned food drive to benefit poor and homeless people in the Berkeley area. Collection bins have been set up at 20 sites across campus.

This is the third annual campuswide drive sponsored by the Newman Hall-based ministry. "We have had great success in the past," says Loaves and Fishes volunteer Kathi Glauner, who works in molecular and cell biology. "But there is a greater need for food than ever before, due to growing homelessness, the poor economy and lost jobs."

All donated food will be given to the Alameda County food bank, the Berkeley Food Pantry, the AIDS Food Bank, local shelters, transitional houses and individual families living in poverty.

For more information, the location of the nearest bin, or to obtain a bin to place in your department, call Glauner at 642-9882.
