Proposition 203 Would Fund Safety and Seismic Work

Berkeley campus is among the K-12 schools, community colleges and universities which would benefit from passage of Proposition 203 on California's March 26 ballot.

The $3 billion dollar bond measure would upgrade and build classrooms, libraries and other needed facilities and would also help make buildings earthquake safe, wire classrooms for computer technology and lessen overcrowding.

At Berkeley, some $54 million would improve earthquake safety at Doe Library, Hearst Memorial Mining Building and the Graduate School of Public Policy.

It would also fund fire safety upgrades at Sproul, Moses and Stephens halls, computer and audio-visual enhancements at Dwinelle Hall, and help construct a new facility for storing the campus's hazardous wastes.

The funds would be used over the next two years.

Among supporters of Proposition 203 are the League of Women Voters, the California Chamber of Commerce and State PTA.
