New Chancellors for UC San Diego, UC Santa Cruz

Robert C. Dynes and M.R.C. Greenwood are the new chancellors of UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz, respectively.

Dynes, a renowned physicist and researcher in semiconductors, succeeds Richard Atkinson, who was named UC president last October. Dynes, 53, previously served as UCSD's senior vice chancellor for academic affairs. He joined the faculty in 1991 as professor of physics, becoming department chair in 1994.

Greenwood, also 53, was dean of graduate studies and vice provost for academic outreach at UC Davis before her appointment. She replaces Karl Pister, who will retire in June.

Greenwood joined UC Davis in 1989 as professor of nutrition and internal medicine and dean of graduate studies. From December 1993 to May 1995, Greenwood served as associate director for science in the White House Office of Science and Technology.
