Caller ID Blocking

Beginning June 1, campus phone numbers will be transmitted to receiving parties with caller ID display capability unless a blocking option is activated.

Since the university functions primarily to serve the public, and phone numbers should be readily available, Telecommunications has chosen selective blocking as the standard feature on all 642- and 643- campus lines. With this feature, campus numbers will be transmitted unless the caller enters a blocking code (*67) before dialing. The *67 code will permit campus users to selectively block transmission of numbers on both intra-campus and outside calls.

Recognizing that some campus customers have valid reasons for wanting their telephone numbers blocked at all times, Telecommunications is offering complete blocking as an option. Complete blocking will automatically prevent the caller's number from being transmitted to the receiving party. To deactivate the block for a specific call, a caller must enter *82 before dialing. As is the case with the selective blocking code, the *82 must be entered before dialing either the five-digit campus number or an external number.

To request complete blocking for specific lines, departments must send Telecommunications an Equipment and Services Requisition form E0730 listing the specific numbers to be blocked. To order forms, call 642-8080.

Note that neither the selective nor the complete blocking option will block the display of a caller's phone number on calls to 800-, 888- or 900- numbers, or to 9-1-1. Callers' numbers will always appear in those cases.

Sculpture Exhibit

An exhibition of the painted steel cut-out sculpture of Joe Slusky, lecturer in architecture and a noted Bay Area artist, is on display in the Environmental Design Library, 210 Wurster Hall, through May 31.

In addition to the colorful and whimsical animal and figure cut-outs now on display, the library features an ongoing, rotating exhibit of Slusky's larger sculptures.

Library hours are Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 17; and Monday through Friday 1 to 5 p.m. from May 18 through 31.

Preschool Openings

The University Preschool, located at the Harold E. Jones Child Study Center, currently has a few openings for the 1996/97 academic year, beginning Aug. 14.

Berkeley staff and faculty families with children who will be at least two years, nine months in August are welcome to apply. The program offers full-day, developmental preschool from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The University Preschool is a joint program of the Institute of Human Development and University Child Care Services.

Alcohol and Drug Policy

A chancellor's task force is attempting to bring a coordinated approach to the development of an alcohol and drug policy on campus.

The Committee on Alcohol and Other Drugs is chaired by Karen Kenney, director of Student Activities and Services, and Mary Olivella at the University Health Service.

The group advises Chancellor Tien on pressing issues, recommends policy changes, exchanges information and provides oversight to the subcommittee on faculty and staff concerns and the subcommittee on student concerns, where much of the hands-on work takes place. Bike to Work Day

Parking and Transportation, in coordination with the City of Berkeley, will host Berkeley "Bike to Work Day" Thursday, May 16, on Lower Sproul Plaza from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is part of a statewide effort to encourage commuters to try bicycling as a viable and healthy commute option.

Lower Sproul Plaza will be one of 85 "Energizer Stations" throughout the Bay Area, where bicycle commuters can stop by to power up with juices, food and other goodies on their way to work or class. Other activities will include free bicycle registration, free bicycle safety checks and bicycle commute information from BicyCAL and Berkeley TRiP.

Those who turn in a Bike to Work Day registration form will be eligible to win bike accessories, gift certificates, Oakland A's tickets or a Cal Adventures sea kayaking class. Call Berkeley TRiP at 643-7665 for more information.
