A Colorful Berkeleyan

Printing Services New Six-Color Press Is Ready for Action

by Fernando Quintero

This special full-color edition of Berkeleyan was printed courtesy of UC Printing Services to showcase the latest addition to its state-of-the-art facility: a $4 million Heidelberg Speedmaster press with six-color capability.

"It's a more efficient press with faster running speed and better quality," said senior sales representative Steve Andrews. "The campus will benefit by getting more color combinations, faster turn-arounds and more efficient service all-around."

In addition to providing faster and better service, Andrews said the new press increases the printing service's size capability from 25x38 sheets to 28x40 sheets.

"It also has lots of bells and whistles, including the ability to scan a printed sheet during the press run, insuring color consistency throughout the run," he said.

UC Printing Services will hold an open house Sept. 13 to showcase its new printing press. There will be a press dedication, and the winner of a poster contest will be announced.

UC Printing Services is a self-supporting campus enterprise that provides quality printing to all UC departments and affiliated units at all campus locations as well other state agencies. It offers a complete range of printing services, including short runs, quick copying and multi-color runs. The shop also has complete bindery and shipping capabilities.

Lead editor for this edition was Berkeleyan senior writer Fernando Quintero. Dawn Finch was lead designer. The Online page was written and designed by public information representative Kathleen Scalise.
