Ten faculty members were recently awarded Chancellor's Special Initiative Grants for outstanding research proposals to the Committee on Research of the Academic Senate. The committee selected the recipients from among 67 who applied for spring 1996 competitive research awards. The initiative grants ranged from $6,000 to $14,000. The awardees and the titles of their research projects are: Stephen Small, assistant professor of African American Studies, "Structural and Ideological Factors Accounting for Differential Treatment of ŒMixed Race' People in Jamaica and Georgia During Slavery" Carolyn Bertozzi, assistant professor of chemistry, "A New Strategy for the Chemical Control of Adhesion at Biological/Material Interfaces" Carla D'Antonio, assistant professor of integrative biology, "Population and Ecosystem Consequences of Non-indigenous Plant Species in Native Ecosystems" Hsiao-Ping Moore, professor of cell biology, "Molecular Mechanism for Protein Sorting in the Secretory Pathway of Yeast" Gareth Thomas, professor of material science and mineral engineering, "Improved Corrosion Resistance of Steels for Reinforced Concrete" Wilhelm Gruissem, professor of plant biology, "Retinoblastoma Protein and Cell Cycle Control" Fenyong Liu, assistant professor of public health, "Transposon-Mediated Mutagenesis of Human Herpes Viruses" David Cohen, professor of rhetoric, "War, Justice, and Responsibility: The Legal Legacy of World War II War Crimes Trials" Mary Ann Mason, associate professor of social welfare, "An Investigation of Step Parent Attitudes Regarding Their Parenting Role"
