An upcoming lecture by Wolfgang K.H. Panofsky, professor and director emeritus of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, will afford the public an opportunity to learn about the environmental issues involved in post-Cold War disarmament from an international expert on nuclear materials controls, environmental radiation and related subjects.

Panofsky speaks Monday, Oct. 28, on "The Physical Heritage of the Cold War" for the 10th Annual Emilio SegrĖ Distinguished Lectureship.

The United States and the former Soviet Union produced more than 60,000 nuclear weapons and accumulated some 70,000 tons of chemical warfare agents. Now this country and Russia, as successor to the Soviet Union, have agreed to destroy chemical weapons arsenals and to reduce nuclear weapons by a factor of perhaps three by the year 2000. Panofsky will discuss the technical problems in achieving the reductions.

Service-Learning Minigrants Available

The Office of Educational Development and the Service-Learning Research and Development Center have announced a Request for Proposals for the Instructional Minigrant Program.

Grants of up to $1,000 are available for courses in spring 1997 that use service-learning, the integration of community service activities into the academic curriculum. Service-learning enhances academic instruction by providing students with experiential opportunities to apply course concepts through meeting real needs in the community.

East Meets West

A strikingly beautiful 75-foot "scroll" is the centerpiece of the UC Berkeley Art Museum exhibition by the Bay Area-based artist Tchai, which runs through Dec. 31. Scroll No. 11 (1996) runs virtually the entire length of the long gallery wall, and consists of a series of tall vertical forms.

"The painting is an amplified version of the traditional Asian handscroll," comments exhibition curator Sherry Goodman.

Born in Thailand of Chinese heritage, Tchai (Yeh Mei-Song) was sent to Malaysia at the age of 10 to receive a classical Chinese education. He moved to the United States to pursue advanced studies in architecture.

"Asian Improv," a musical parallel to the Tchai exhibition, is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 17, at 3 p.m. in the museum. The performance is free with museum admission. For information call 642-2358.
