Awards and Honors

Stephen G. Miller, professor of classical archaeology, on Oct. 21 received an honorary doctorate of philosophy in archaeology from the University of Athens.

The ceremony was presided over by Petros A. Gemtos, chancellor of the University of Athens, and took place in its 150 year-old central ceremonial hall.

In presenting the honor, the University of Athens cited Miller's quarter century of excavations at Nemea and his efforts to make his work available to the public, for instance, in his construction of a museum at Nemea and his conversion of the site into an archaeological park. Miller has also been instrumental in fostering cooperation between Greek and American scholars, in part by opening the American School of Classical Studies to wider Greek participation when he served as its director in the 1980s and by helping involve Greek and American students in the excavations at Nemea.

Miller has been professor of classical archeology at Berkeley since 1973, when he also assumed his position as director of the Nemea excavations.
