On a recent visit to campus, U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer suggested Sen. Trent Lott will be a lot "friendlier to work with" than former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole. But Lott, she conceded, will still be "a hard-ball conservative, very right-wing." Boxer, spoke before a standing-room-only crowd at the Institute for Governmental Studies on Halloween. The liberal California Democrat surprised many when asked who she'd most like to see head up President Clinton's second-term cabinet. Boxer could muster only one name: Sam Nunn, the conservative Georgia democrat who is retiring from the Senate. "People always ask 'What were your surprises in the Senate?' One of the surprises was what a good friend I became with Sam Nunn." "I think he is extremely bright, reasonable and... I think that he would lead us in a good direction if he were to be, for example, secretary of state or defense secretary," Boxer said.
She added she has no intention of ever vying for a cabinet post herself -- unless her re-election bid in 1998 fails.
