The athletic music of Taiko drumming was used in ancient Japan to drive away evil spirits and celebrate bountiful harvests. The historic art form was re-discovered, and Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka introduced it to the United States in 1968. Taiko drumming has now assumed international popularity. The 28th Annual Taiko Festival will feature many of the world's foremost drummers. Groups from the United States, Mexico and Japan will perform at Zellerbach Hall Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 23 and 24. Saturday's performance begins at 8 p.m., Sunday's at 3 p.m. The festival will feature the O-daiko, a one-ton, 12-foot-high drum.
Tickets are available through Cal Performances for $17, $20 and $25. For more information, call 642-9988. |
