Winter Holiday Choral Concert Caps Fall Series

The Department of Music presents its Winter Holiday Choral Music concert, the final event in the fall series of Wednesday noon concerts, Dec. 4 in Hertz Hall.

Visiting director Joseph Jennings will conduct the University Chorus in a performance of choral music by Parsons, Tavener and Finzi. "Jingle Bells," "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and other carols will be sung with audience participation.

Jennings is the leader of the acclaimed men's choral ensemble Chanticleer, which has performed more than 1,000 concerts on three continents under his direction. A native of Augusta, Ga., he has performed as countertenor and pianist with jazz ensembles and directed church, theater and opera productions. Jennings is well known for his arrangements of pop, gospel and spirituals. He has also made numerous recordings and premiered major commissioned works by many of American's foremost composers.

The concert will be held from 12:15 to 1 p.m. The doors open at 11:55 a.m. Guests are encouraged to arrive early, as an overflow crowd is expected for this popular event.

Some Ticket Letters Sent in Error

Parking and Transportation has sent follow-up letters to people who received notices from a new contractor hired to handle the campus's outstanding parking citations.

While the majority of those who received a notice had not paid their parking fines, letters also went in error to some who no longer had outstanding tickets.

"The data provided to our new vendor failed to reflect some expunged records for citations which were cleared or dismissed. If you received a letter regarding a parking citation that has been paid or dismissed, simply ignore it and we will correct our files," said the follow-up letter.

The letter apologized for the small number of notices that went out in error.

It also directed those whose citations have not been paid or dismissed to follow the instructions in the original notice by calling 1-800-969-6158 for immediate service.

War Classes Dedicate Memorial Glade

When classes of 1945, 1946, War 1947 and 1947 meet for their 50th reunion this weekend, Nov. 23 and 24, they will dedicate a project close to the heart -- the War Memorial Glade just north of the library.

More than 1,800 supporters -- 30 percent of the alumni in those classes -- contributed $1.12 million to create the glade and establish an endowment for the Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy.

On Nov. 24, Chancellor Tien will dedicate the outdoor space in honor of those in the campus family who served in the Second World War. A reflecting pool, to be added in the coming months, will honor those in the campus community who died in the war.

Faculty Club Catering

The Faculty Club is gearing up for the holidays by offering special catering packages for campus parties, meetings and receptions.

Have a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, light a yule log in the Howard Lounge, ring in the New Year in the Great Hall or choose another of several club conference rooms available to groups of up to 200.

A Big Game In More Ways Than One

The 99th Big Game is Saturday, Nov. 23, at Memorial Stadium. With a bowl berth on the line for both Cal at 6 and 4 and Stanford (5-5), the game is expected to be especially lively.

A Cal victory would ensure a trip to either the Sun Bowl or Aloha Bowl, while Stanford needs a victory to make it to the Sun Bowl.

According to the athletic office, the last time the Big Game had similar stakes was in 1935, when Cal and Stanford played for a trip to the Rose Bowl. The Cardinal won the trip to Pasadena that year.

Among the time-honored Big Game events is the bonfire rally at the Greek Theatre. It is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m.

There are also a few other "Big" events on tap.

The 11th "Big Sing," better known as the Big Game "Sing Off," brings together the Cal and Stanford singing groups Wednesday, Nov. 20, at Wheeler Hall at 8 p.m. Tickets are $4 for students and seniors, and $8 for others in a celebration of the rivalry.

The "Big Splash" matchup pits the Cal and Stanford water polo teams at Spieker Pool. The Nov. 23 contest begins at 10 a.m.
