1997 Wellness Lectures -- Applications Sought

Faculty of all nine UC campuses are invited to submit an abstract and application for the 1997 Wellness Lectures Program.

Six distinguished lecturers will be selected, and an award of $3,000 will be made to each lecturer, with an additional $1,000 to cover research assistance and editing expenses. Each lecturer will present an hour-long lecture in October 1997.

Lectures should address policy implications or service issues, including clinical or personal recommendations or strategies for improving the health of Californians through prevention and other wellness efforts. These may be related to populations defined by age, ethnicity, geography, culture, activity, occupation or risk behavior. The committee encourages the submission of broad conceptual analyses, including problem descriptions and innovative solutions.

Songs From Musicals At Hertz March 5

American musical theater songs by contemporary composers are featured Wednesday, March 5, as part of the series of free noon concerts offered by the Department of Music.

The featured performers are singer Tania Johnson and pianist Wayland Lee, both Berkeley music majors. The two will perform a selection of lesser known theater songs by Sondheim, Finn, Katz, Carnelia, Bock, Weill, Herman and Coleman, and others. The program will include "Everybody Says Don't" (from "Anyone Can Whistle"), "Finishing the Hat" (from "Sunday in the Park with George"), "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart" (from Thumbs Up), "Where Am I Going?" (from Sweet Charity) and "Pirate Jenny" (from Threepenny Opera).

The concert time, at Hertz Hall, is 12:15-1 p.m.

Just Say Nž: Classic Tale May 1, 2, 4

Japan's centuries-old theatrical form, Nž drama, is the focus of a series of classes and performances on campus this spring, and "Funabenkei" (Benkei in the Boat), is the classic 16th-century tale chosen for production on Thursday and Friday, May 1 and 2, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 4 at 3 p.m.

"Some actors masked," says Professor of Music Bonnie Wade, "all gorgeously robed, moving to the music of flute and drums -- these are the elements of the centuries-old theatrical form" that "bridges the reams of art and ritual," transporting us back to medieval Japan.

A favorite of Japanese and Western audiences alike, "Funabenkei" by Kanze Kojiro tells the story of warring clans who struggled for political control in the 12th century.

Scenes from other Nž plays will be performed as well.

Greek and Roman Art

Masterworks of Greek and Roman art from the Phoebe Hearst collection are on view through April 20 at Berkeley Art Museum. With some 90 compelling objects of ancient art from roughly 900 B.C. to 50 A.D., the exhibition explores art and culture through pottery, sculpture, bronzes, jewelry, coins and a selection of fragile ancient glass.
