Participants find out about back basics, learn stretching and strengthening exercises and preventive self-care and practice good posture and proper body mechanics.

CARE Services

Women and Aging Support Group. March 11 and 18, noon-1 p.m.

This group is being formed in response to requests from a number of women who began their careers at the university when they were "young," and who feel their bodies and outlooks are changing as they age. Decisions women face as they age will be explored.

Workers' Compensation

ADA Training for Supervisors. March 12, 9 a.m.-noon.

A workshop by Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors and an Employment Analyst to clarify the Americans With Disabilities Act. The class discusses what an essential job function is, proper interviewing techniques under the law, how to assess what a reasonable accommodation is and how to properly complete required forms.

Correctness in Writing: A Review of Grammar and Punctuation. Six two-hour sessions, March 19, 21, 26, and April 2, 4, and 9., 9-11 a.m. Fee: $120.

This course addresses the most common grammar and punctuation problems in a relaxed, fast-paced and fun way. Included are sentence fragments, run-ons and comma splices, comma and semi-colon rules, verb-subject agreement, subject-pronoun agreement, parallel construction problems, misplaced modifiers and forming plurals and possessives.

Business Writing Workshop Series, 12:10-1:30: p.m. Fee: $25 per workshop or $100 for all five.

Resolving Conflicts for Staff. Date has been changed to March 24, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Participants discuss and analyze typical workplace conflicts, assess their styles of dealing with conflict, learn to select a strategies for dealing with conflict that are appropriate to the situation and use case studies and role playing to practice effective listening and speaking skills.

Strategic and Operational Planning: The Basis for Developing Budgets and Managing Resources. April 3, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and April 10, 8:30 a.m.-noon

Participants learn how to formulate departmental goals and objectives, relate these to higher-level strategies and goals, identify means to measure whether or not departmental objectives are met, develop departmental action plans and monitor/control operational actions and budgets to meet objectives.


CAL PACT (CAL People and Computer Training) provides computer classes for staff at no charge. Classes are offered on computer basics, the Berkeley computing environment, Internet resources and health matters related to computer use, as well as on Windows 95, Excel, Word and Eudora.
