The 1994 tragedy in Rwanda is the subject of an exhibition of photographs by Magnum photographer Gilles Peress on view April 10 through 25 at NorthGate Hall. First exhibited at New York's Museum of Modern Art, "The Silence" features large black and white prints interspersed with sections of the report of the United Nations commission charged with investigating the Rwandan tragedy. The show is the inaugural event of the Graduate School of Journalism's newly funded Center for Photography and is part of a two-day conference, "Reporting from the Killing Fields: Genocide, Crime Against Humanity and War," April 11 and 12, cosponsored by the Graduate School of Journalism, UC Berkeley Human Rights Center and the Institute of International Studies. Peress' photojournalistic work has been described as reminiscent of Lee Miller and Margaret Bourke-White's concentration camp photographs of another generation. It includes "Telex Iran," "Farewell to Bosnia" and extensive documentation of Northern Ireland. Peress will speak on a panel of distinguished journalists looking at reporting on the Rwandan genocide. New York Times correspondent Ray Bonner is among the panelists; Bay Area journalist Stan Stesser will moderate. The time and location of the panel discussion is April 11, Sibley Auditorium of Bechtel Engineering Building, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. For information about the conference, other panels and speakers, contact Molly Ryan at 642-0965. |
