American and German educators met on campus during the week of March 16 for an ambitious conference on "University in Transition." In the opening session, UC President Richard Atkinson, left, [for pictures please see print edition of Berkeleyan] spoke on present challenges of the research university, while Chancellor Tien addressed research funding and its effect on the research agenda. Other topics included investment and structure, external and internal governance and managerial mechanism and academic norms.
Centrum f¸r Hochschulentwicklung was the German sponsor. Campus sponsors included International and Area Studies, the Center for German and European Studies and the Center for Studies in Higher Education.
