Robert O. Ritchie, professor of materials science, has been elected as the president of the International Congress on Fracture. The congress is the premier organization worldwide governing the study and application of fracture, with delegates from over 50 countries. Ritchie was elected at its quadrennial meeting in Sydney, Australia in April. Ritchie heads the Structural Materials Department of the Materials Science Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He will serve as president until 2001. At the recent annual business meeting of the Western Association of College and University Housing, Elizabeth Simpson, housing facilities manager of the Foothill, Bowles and Stern residence halls, was elected association vice president. Steve Nygaard, assistant director for residential and family living, was awarded the association's Diversity and Affirmative Action Achievement Award for an individual. Criteria included demonstrated commitment to addressing diversity issues
in the individual's area of responsibility, uniqueness in outreach and recruitment
