A stellar lineup of scholars, writers and notable personalities from a range of fields will address the 1997 graduating class in commencement ceremonies that begin May 10 and continue through May 22. In all, more than 60 departments, schools and colleges will hold separate graduation ceremonies. This year's notable speakers scheduled to participate include former presidential advisor George Stephanopoulos, who speaks to political science grads, and attorney Johnnie Cochran, who addresses the African American Studies and black graduation ceremony. U.S. News & World Report editor James Fallows speaks at the Graduate School of Journalism while actor and 1963 Cal alumnus Stacy Keach is scheduled to inspire dramatic arts graduates. Berkeley poet and journalist Mark O'Brien, who is the subject of the recent Academy Award winning documentary "Breathing Lessons," will speak to English graduates; novelist Martin Cruz Smith addresses history grads. Dr. David Satcher, director of the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, speaks to public health graduates; Stanton Glantz, professor and anti-tobacco activist, addresses the human biodynamics ceremony. Entertainer and education advocate Bill Cosby will deliver the main address at a Commencement Convocation for graduating seniors, Tuesday, May 13, at 4 p.m. in the Hearst Greek Theater.
