Is it a COMET?
Yes, but we aren't talking about Hale-Bopp. We're talking about the Communications
Telemanage-ment System-the software that will replace the existing Communication
and Network Services (CNS) database systems.
Compco's MySoft client/server software has been selected to be campus's
new telemanagement system. Compco, based in Nashville, Tenn., has been in
the telemanage-ment business for more than 19 years and has been used by
Berkeley's Residence Telephone Services for more than eight years. The MySoft
product is also in use at many other campuses, including UC Davis and UCSF.
MySoft software will be phased in over the next two years.
It will provide improved voice and data billing information, streamlined
customer service and repair functions, and data access over the World Wide
Web.
One of the first changes will be in the billing statement format.
If you have questions about the charges on your billing statement, call
your Telecommunications billing representative. For questions about the
COMET project, contact Terri M. Kouba at kouba@uclink. berkeley.edu

It's official. Chancellor Tien has formally notified the department of
mechanical engineering that he will resume his position as a professor when
he steps down as chancellor July 1. However, Tien will be on sabbatical
leave for the next academic year. "This is a wonderful development
for the department,"professor David Auslander said of Tien's return
in an email to faculty and staff of the department.
Four-Star Poet Profs
Robert Pinsky, the newly named U.S. poet laureate, has something in common
(besides poetry) with English professor and outgoing laureate Robert Hass:
Berkeley.
Before taking his current job at Boston University, Pinsky taught in
the Berkeley English department in the late '80s.
Pinsky, 56, is highly regarded for his books of poetry, prose and translation.
His 1994 verse translation of Dante's "Inferno" became a best
seller. He was named poet laureate March 28 by the Librarian of Congress.
Robert Hass, during his tenure, crisscrossed the country to promote the
cause of poetry. On May 1 he gave a final lecture in his official capacity
as the nation's most highly decorated poet.
