On Monday, July 21, from noon to 1:30 p.m. there will be a special discussion in 22 Warren Hall of President Clinton's National Bioethics Advisory Commission's report on human cloning. David Perlman, science writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, will moderate a panel to include experts from health care, religion, business and academia. Sciences University, and physician Bernard Lo of UCSF, will also be on the
panel. The Econometrics Laboratory's fifth annual summer symposium sponsored by the National Science Foundation is being held on campus July 29 through Aug. 1. The event honors Professor Daniel McFadden for his contributions to economic theory and econometrics. The focus will be on eliciting directly information about people's preferences. Pacific Bell is set to begin distributing 1997 Oakland phone directories to campus July 31, and a recycling plan has been set up to dispose of the old ones. Communication and Network Services (formerly Telecommunications) has arranged with the city of Berkeley for recycling bins. They will be in place from Aug. 7 through Aug. 19 as a self-service enterprise; directories left for custodians will not be recycled. The blue dumpsters will have a yellow banner identifying them. Recycling locations are Barrows, SE corner; Boalt, NW corner, Cory, S side; Dwinelle, W side near Durham Theater; Evans, NE side; Hildebrand, S side; McCone, NW corner; Old Art Gallery, SE corner; Tolman, W driveway; Valley Life Sciences, loading area in SE corner; Wheeler, near Cross Campus Drive; Wurster, W patio. With the installation of InfoMail, the campus-owned and managed voice mail system, voice mail rates have been reduced and new options are available, Communication and Network Services Director Cliff Frost announced recently. Until now, there has been a single level of service at a single monthly cost: a mailbox that saves and stores up to 30 messages, with the option of adding voice mail paging. Beginning July 1 there will four levels of voice mail. These range from $6 for basic service that stores 10 messages to $12 a month for 30 messages and an option to use voiceforms.
