Arlie Russell Hochschild, professor of sociology, wrote the foreword to "Not Our Kind of Girl: Unraveling the Myths of Black Teenage Motherhood" a new book by Elaine Bell Kaplan from University of California Press.

The 277 page book, to be published August 26, "cuts through the simplifying stereotypes of both conservative and liberal explanations," writes Kaplan, "by exploring the complex context and feelings of the teenager herself."

Kaplan is assistant professor of sociology at University of Southern California and a former teenage mother herself. The project started as a dissertation and received financial support from the sociology department's Graduate Student Fellowship Fund and the Institute for the Study of Social Change.
