Peter Walker has been appointed chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. In announcing the appointment, Harrison Fraker, dean of the College of Environmental Design, said: "We are thrilled that Peter Walker will be taking over as chair. His reputation is built on a superb record of innovative designs, critical and important publications and multiple awards. We look forward to his energy, leadership and eloquent voice." Walker was a Regents Lecturer at Berkeley in spring 1996, and a faculty member at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design from 1976 to '91 where he was chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture from 1978 to '81. Walker is a landscape architect with 40 years of experience in practice and teaching. Barclay Simpson, an East Bay businessman with longtime ties to the campus, is the new president of the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive Board of Trustees. Simpson, who has been a trustee since 1988, chairs the board of Simpson Manufacturing, based in Pleasanton. He and his wife Sharon Henley Simpson own Barclay Simpson Fine Arts Gallery in Lafayette. "I feel honored to help lead the museum and film archive into the next century," Simpson says. "Concluding our endowment campaign will be one of the priorities." Simpson added that an ongoing goal of the board and staff is to increase awareness among students and the public of the cultural programs offered by the museum and film archive. A Berkeley alumnus, Simpson has supported a wide range of campus activities
and institutions, including the school of business, the library, Lawrence
Hall of Science, the College of Environmental Design and athletics. He is
also a trustee of the UC Berkeley Foundation. |
