Sept. 18 Deadline To Nominate Top Staff Nominations are open through Thursday, Sept. 18 for the Chancellor's Outstanding Staff Awards. The award is one of the highest honors presented to staff members by Chancellor Berdahl, and exemplifies outstanding achievement carrying out the university's mission. Recipients will be selected by the Chancellor's Staff Advisory Committee. All Berkeley staff except executive tier administrators and those with academic titles are eligible. Individuals or teams may be nominated and nominations need not come from the nominee's supervisor or department. The 1997 awards will be presented Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Alumni House. Oct. 6: Tom Brokaw "In Conversation" The first in the continuing lecture series "Communicating in America" presents Tom Brokaw, NBC Nightly News anchor and managing editor Oct. 6. The event is hosted by Orville Schell, dean of the School of Journalism, and presented by the Graduate School of Journalism in association with Cal Performances. Communication: Seminars for Couples A new series addressing common communication issues faced by couples in the 1990s is being offered by CARE Services, cosponsored with the Staff Affirmative Action Office. The series consists of six individual early-evening seminars. The first, designed for couples of all kinds, covers the five most common causes of difficulty between couples and strategies for addressing them. Its date is Wednesday, Sept. 24. Subsequent seminars are oriented to culturally specific communication issues. Partners of different ethnic/racial backgrounds is the topic for Thursday, Oct. 9. Subsequent seminars are devoted to Asian-American couples (Oct. 16), gay and lesbian couples (Oct. 22), African-American couples (Oct. 29) and Latino /Chicano couples (Nov. 3). Each of the seminar facilitators is a well-known local therapist is private practice with at least 10 years of experience in the field and in his or her presentation area. Jefferson Lecture: Ex-Senator Reflects Alan K. Simpson, former U.S. Senator, will deliver the Jefferson Memorial Lecture "Reflections on a Life in Public Service," Tuesday, Sept. 16. Simpson was elected to the Senate in 1978 to represent the State of Wyoming. After his first term, he was elected by his peers in 1984 to serve as assistant republican leader, and served in that capacity until 1994. He left the Senate with 18 years of service, in addition to 13 previous years in state government. Simpson currently is the Lombard Chair at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He is also a trustees of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts a regent for the Smithsonian. The Jefferson Memorial Fund was established in 1944 for the study and promotion of the basic principles of American Democracy. Simpson speaks at 4:10 p.m. in the Lipman Room, Barrows Hall, 8th floor. The Jefferson Memorial Lecture is free and open to the public. Foreign Language Pedagogy Reconsidered The Berkeley Language Center is holding a series of teacher training workshops throughout the fall. The first, Thursday, Sept. 18, features a Berkeley-Stanford panel on "Rethinking the Nature and Structure of Foreign Language and Literature Departments." Recent developments within the humanities are prompting a reevaluation of the traditional structure of departments dedicated to the teaching and research of foreign languages, literatures and cultures. The panel will explore these new developments and their implications from various perspectives. Noon Concert Sept. 17: Solo Piano Recital The annual series of free Wednesday Noon concerts in Hertz Hall continues Sept. 17 with a solo piano recital, "Reflections in the Water," by Nalini Gwynne. A musicology graduate student from Wales, Gwynne will perform pieces by Scarlatti, Berg, Debussy and Brahams. The series is presented by the Department of Music.
