The Department of City and Regional Planning celebrates 50 years on campus this year. A year-long celebration began with Founders Day, Sept. 6, honoring first faculty Jack Kent, Donald Foley, Fran Violich and Melvin Webber; as well as Corwin Mocine and Catherine Bauer Wurster, now deceased. Kent founded the department in 1948. Events through the coming year include a series of alumni lectures on a variety of planning topics from "Is Housing Dying?" to "Is the New Urbanism Good Urban Design?" Two anniversary publications will highlight achievements of faculty and alumni over the past half century. Also part of the 50th anniversary celebration is a campaign to build the department's endowment by increasing alumni participation in the College of Environmental Design Annual Fund. Areas slated for additional support are graduate student fellowships, distinguished professorships, endowed chairs, curriculum development and faculty research, says chair Michael Southworth. The year will end with a jubilee May 8-9 and a ball at the Berkeley City
