Evelyn Nakano Glenn, professor of women's studies and ethnic studies, has been elected president of the national Society for the Study of Social Problems, one of academia's largest social science organizations. Glenn is serving as president-elect during the 1997-98 academic year. She will assume the presidency at the society's annual meeting in August 1998. Since coming to Berkeley in 1990 from the State University of New York, Glenn has served as chair of women's studies and has focused on women and work, the Asian-American family and on graduate seminar instruction. She received her doctorate from Harvard, after an undergraduate degree from Berkeley. Glenn has also served on the national council of the American Sociological Association. Architecture lecturer Erik Hemingway, principal of Heming-way + Associates in San Francisco, was awarded a citation in the 44th annual Progressive Architecture Awards. The citation is in recognition of his Syrian Prototype House, which addresses the issues of mass production, economy and regional cultural identity. James Matisoff, professor of linguistics, was named Honorary Distinguished Research Fellow by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences at an award ceremony held in Beijing in June. Matisoff is one of 10 scholars who have been honored by the academy,
and the first linguistics professor to receive such an award. He is an expert
in Southeast Asian languages, and has been recognized for his ground-breaking
work on a Sino-Tibetan etymological dictionary. |
