  • Walking Group. Ongoing, Mon.,Wed., Fri, 12:10 p.m., Campanile.

    Take a step towards a healthier lifestyle and enjoy a 30-35 minute walk through campus every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 12:10 p.m. The Walking Group meets at the Campanile. Make it part of your exercise routine, burn calories, increase your energy and meet new people. No enrollment is necessary.

 

  • Your Back Matters. Oct. 9, 16 and 23, 12:10-1:30 p.m.

    Find out about back basics, learn stretching and strengthening exercises and preventive self-care and practice good posture and proper body mechanics. Participants need to enroll in all three sessions.

  • Computers at Work. Oct. 15, 10:30 a.m.-noon.

    Learn about health issues related to computer use, design a user-friendly workstation and practice exercises to relieve computer-related aches and pains. This workshop meets campus.

    Injury and Illness Prevention Program's health and safety training requirement for computer users. Callthe 643-4646 to enroll.

  • Instructing the Instructor: Stress Management for Faculty Members. Oct. 6, 3-5 p.m., Lewis Latimer Room, Faculty Club.

    This seminar is designed to enable interested faculty members to come together to discuss the unique stresses facing faculty today and to assist CARE Services in developing support services useful to faculty working in today's academic/research environment.

    The format of the seminar, an informal meeting held on campus, is designed to initiate dialogue in a convenient and comfortable fashion. No enrollment is necessary.

 

  • Women and Aging Group. Oct. 7, 14, 21, noon-1 p.m.

    This group is for women who may have begun their careers at the university when they were "young," and who feel their bodies and outlooks are changing as they age. Decisions women face as they age will be explored. Advance enrollment is required.

 

  • National Depression Screening Day. Oct.9, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., various locations.

    Faculty and staff are invited to participate in the day's events to include a depression screening in Stephens Lounge, MLK Student Union, information booth on Sproul Plaza and a free public lecture on medications and depression treatment at 4 p.m., 3290 Tang Center, 2222 Bancroft Way. No enrollment necessary.

  • Assertiveness. Oct. 8, 2:30-4:30 p.m.

    This workshop will explore the components and dynamics of constructive assertiveness.

    In addition, follow-up discussion groups will provide interested participants the opportunity to discuss their individual situations in a safe, supportive environment.

  • Couples Communication for Partners of Different Ethnic/Racial Backgrounds. Oct. 9, 6-7:30 p.m., Tang Center.

    This early evening seminar addresses common communication difficulties encountered by partners of differing ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds.

    The presentation will also consider tools that couples can use to work through conflict arising from different communication styles.

    Presenter Zonya Johnson of Solano Pacific Psychological Services is a psychologist with extensive experience and expertise on the subject.

    Couples as well as individuals are encouraged to attend.

  • Financial Issues and Estate Planning. Oct. 10, noon-1:30 p.m. (including optional 30-minute discussion). Section Club Room, Tang Center.

    Part of CARE Services' ongoing Taking Care brown-bag series, this presentation offers individuals who are caring for a parent or other adult strategies to help plan and manage their loved one's finances.

    Tim Millar, financial planner and former executive director of the Alzheimer's Association, and colleague Robert Jacques will discuss financial management, estate planning and more.

    No enrollment is required.

  • Dealing with Difficult Situations and Behaviors in the Workplace. Oct. 20 and 22, 10 a.m.-noon.

    This workshop will help participants learn ways to analyze and deal with problematic situations, people and personal styles in constructive ways.
