Helen E. Walsh, a national nutrition and public health leader, died June 29 at Marin General Hospital. She was 91 and lived in Belvedere with her brother. Walsh served as chief of the bureau of nutrition for the California Department of Public Health from 1947 to 1971, and as a lecturer for the School of Public Health. Together with Jessie Bierman, she established the school's public health nutrition program. Among the many accomplishments of her career was service as president of the American Dietetic Association, where she initiated reforms that led to its democratization, and as president of the California Dietetic Association. She was also a founder and president of the Society for Nutrition Education. Walsh is survived by her brother, James B. Walsh, of Belvedere; her
niece, Marian Walsh Darling, of Mill Valley; her nephew, John D. Walsh,
of Hope, Idaho; and four grandnieces and nephews. |
