Volunteers Are Needed For the Charitable Campaign

This year's UC Charitable Campaign will literally kick off Nov. 1 at half-time during the Oregon State football game, with the "field goal" of reaching $200,000 in contributions by Dec. 31.

"The campaign committee has set an ambitious goal to not only raise $200,000 for important community charitable organizations, but also to double participation and secure campaign pledges from 1,000 campus employees," said Vice Chancellor Horace Mitchell, who co-chairs the campus campaign. Mitchell serves on the board of United Way, which collaborates with the campus on the annual fund drive.

The Berkeley Pledge will once again be featured in the campus campaign, and donors will have a broad range of giving opportunities.

One innovation of this year's campaign is the involvement of students, noted Assistant Vice Chancellor Linda Weimer, campaign co-chair.

"We are delighted that a dozen students have come forward to volunteer to work on the campaign. They will be working to give fellow students the option of donating funds or their time as volunteers to local charitable organizations that are in need of their help."

The campaign committee also is looking for employee volunteers to help spread the word about the campaign in their home departments and colleges.

Those who wish to volunteer should contact campaign committee member Lillian Brock, executive assistant to Vice Chancellor Mitchell, 2-3100, or email her at llbrock@uclink4.

This year's campaign committee is planning a series of events to raise awareness of the campaign and thank participants.

The campaign committee also includes Christine Freedman, Public Affairs; Christina Barnett, Student Activities and Services; Mike Desler, Intercollegiate Athletics; William Foley, Campus Police Department; Richard Buxbaum, International and Area Studies; Louise Garrett, Development Office; James Hensler, Darrell Kelly and Larry Sautter, Business Services; Faye Lawson, Haas School of Business; Vicky Morel, Chancellor's Office; Mayra Nieves-Bekele, International House; Kathy Scott, Human Biodynamics; Ella Wheaton, Staff Ombudsperson; Katharine Andrews, Recreational Sports; Brenda Gutstadt, Slavic and East Europe Center; and Eric Zarate, Community Affairs.
