The 13th Annual Fall Gospel Extravaganza, sponsored by the departments of African American Studies and Music, will be held Saturday, Nov. 8, in Berkeley. The program features the award-winning Young Inspiration Gospel Choir, made up of Berkeley students and led by founding director Silvester C. Henderson. Special guest Melanie Daniels of Brooklyn, N.Y., vocal director for Mariah Carey, will also perform. The time and location are 6 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 2407 Dana St., at the corner of Channing Way. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Children under four are admitted free. Representations Issue: "The Fate of Culture" "The Fate of 'Culture': Geertz and Beyond," is a special issue of Representations devoted to the legacy of the path-breaking anthropologist. Edited by anthropologist Sherry B. Ortner, the special issue (summer 1997, no. 59) of the Berkeley-based journal includes views of seven prominent scholars on the current status of the culture concept across the interpretive disciplines. "Geertz must be credited," Ortner writes, "with reconfig-uring, almost single-handedly, the boundary between the social sciences and the humanities for the second half of the 20th century. The essays included-on such subjects as Egyptian soap opera, ghosts in Elizabethan England, 18th-century Jewish merchants and Himalayan mountaineering-exemplify the kinds of projects Geertz's work has inspired. Published by the University of California Press, the 14-year old journal offers critical analysis, scholarship and imaginative inquiry on the concept of "culture." Faculty members Carla Hesse and Stephen Greenblatt co-chair its editorial board. The journal's website is http://violet.berkeley.edu:7000/ The College of Natural Resources will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the construction of Mulford Hall, home to the college's forestry program, Friday, Nov. 7, from 5 to 6 p.m. Speakers will include Joe McBride, chair of the Division of Forest Science, who will give a presentation on the history of the building, and Bob Callahan, former director of the Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station, originally housed in Mulford. The program also marks the opening of the building's Walter Mulford Gallery. The inaugural exhibit will feature early photographs of sequoia and redwood from the Mulford Hall Forestry Archives. Members of the California Alumni Foresters organization will attend the presentation and gallery opening. Both the presentation and the gallery opening are free and open to the public. Stephanie Pan, mezzosoprano, and Wendy Liao, pianist, will perform "I Hate Music!" a song cycle of five children's songs for soprano, and "Two Love Songs," all by Bernstein; Barber songs written to poems of James Joyce; five Bacon songs using poems of Emily Dickinson, the 23rd Psalm and Songs of Solomon set to music by Creston and Rochberg respectively, as well as compositions by Britten and Ives.
