At Campus Design Institute, Seven Western Mayors Will Meet to Strategize

Seven mayors from the Western United States will participate in the Mayor's Institute on City Design: West, to be held on campus Nov. 20 to 22 and sponsored by the College of Environmental Design.

A public event associated with the mayor's conference will be held Nov. 20, when Frances Halsband of Kliment and Halsband in New York City lectures at 8 p.m. in Wurster Hall.

The annual mayor's institute, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, offers a select group of city leaders from the Western states the opportunity to work with a resource team of designers and development experts to examine a broad range of design ideas and city improvement strategies. Each mayor presents a case study of a critical issue facing his or her city and discusses alternative approaches and creative solutions.

This year's participants include the mayors of Gilbert, Ariz.; Oakdale, Oxnard and Fremont, Calif.; Colorado Springs, Colo; Corvalis, Ore.; and Redmond, Wash.

The institute does not "advocate one style of design over another or pretend that a quick 'design fix' will solve a complex problem," explains Samina Quraeshi, director of design at the NEA. "We want to encourage debate...and raise the level of understanding among the nation's mayors."

Background material for the institute is prepared by faculty from the interdisciplinary Urban Places Design Group and graduate students in the college. Seven faculty members will serve as the resource panel.
