Holiday Donations for Community Organizations The Women's Resource Center and the UC Office of the General Counsel are among the campus and UC units organizing special holiday-season giving to benefit the community. The Women's Resource Center will be collecting warm clothes for homeless and transitional families between Dec. 1 and 14. Donations of clean clothes, in bags or boxes, may be delivered to the center, located in 250 Cesar Chavez Student Center. The clothing will given to local shelters and charities. The UC Office of the General Counsel, located in downtown Oakland, will hold its annual day-before-thanksgiving bake sale, Wednesday, Nov. 26., beginning at 9:30 a.m. In past years the sale has sold out within the first few hours, so plan to come early. This year's proceeds will benefit St. Vincent's Day Home, which provides quality child care and health and social services to low-income families in the Oakland area. Delicious baked goods, including cakes, pies, torts, scones, cookies, brownies and bagels, will be offered. Pies specially prepared by Nation's and dinner rolls prepared by Neldham's Bakery can be ordered ahead of time and picked up at the sale. The office is located in the Kaiser Building, 300 Lakeside Dr. (at Harrison), room 712. Beginning Dec. 3, the General Counsel office will also have its annual "Giving Tree, which will be decorated with letters to Santa from children at St. Vincent's Day Home. Participants may take a letter from the tree and bring the requested gift to the office by Monday, Dec. 22, for delivery to children at St. Vincent's. Films from South and Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico will be presented Friday, Nov. 21, through Sunday, Nov. 23, as part of the Latin American Film Society's third annual film festival. Sponsors are the film society and campus' Center for Latin American Studies. A gala evening of Cuban film, music and dance, starting at 8 p.m., will open the festival Nov. 21 at the Palace of Fine Arts. On Saturday and Sunday, the festival moves to the Victoria Theater, on 16th St. near Mission. For information call (415) 931-1657. Slavic carols and other music of the season will be featured at the free noon concert Wednesday, Dec. 3. The Chamber Chorus and University Chorus, directed by Marika Kuzma, associate professor of music, will perform. The program includes Christmas and Epiphany carols from Ukraine, sung in Ukrainian. Julian Kytasty, one of the world's most proficient players of the bandura, a 50-string Ukrainian folk instrument, is the featured guest. The choirs will perform some works with the bandura. The doors to Hertz Hall open at 11:55 a.m. and the concert begins promptly at 12:15 p.m. The annual December holiday concert is very popular, so plan to arrive early. Additionally, Kytasty will give a colloquium/demonstration on the bandura Friday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m., in 125 Morrison Hall. The correct date for poet Derek Walcott's reading is Thursday, Nov. 20. Walcott, winner of the 1992 Nobel Prize in Poetry, will read at 4 p.m. in the Maude Fife Room, 315 Wheeler. Why do crayons break and toys sometimes fail to work? Find out at Lawrence Hall of Science in a series of hands-on activities, models and experiments designed by students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
