'Tis the Season for Campus Holiday Performances Song, dance and music fill the air as the campus prepares for the holidays with a variety of special events. The season kicks off with the "Messiah Sing," Friday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Hertz Hall. Audience members sing the choral parts of this classic Handel composition, accompanied by guest soloists and the University Symphony Orchestra. The performance benefits the Young Musicians Program, which provides professional music train-ing for gifted low-income students. For information call 642-2686. The holidays go south of the border when "Fiesta Navidad"- featuring Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano and Ballet Folklorico Ollin-brings music, dance and colorful theatrics to Zellerbach Auditorium, Sunday, Dec. 7, at 3 p.m. The performance includes a re-enactment of the Fiesta of La Posada, mariachi renditions of traditional Christmas carols with an audience sing-a-long and traditional Mexican folk dances. For information call 642-9988. The classic fairy tale of the Nutcracker gets transplanted into the 1960s with Mark Morris's zany "The Hard Nut," which plays at Zellerbach Auditorium, Dec. 13-21. The original 19th-century German setting is replaced by a mod, Melmac-adorned suburban home in this witty adaption. For information, call 642-9988. Lawrence Hall of Science presents the Golden Bough Song Troupe, Saturday, Dec. 27, with performances at noon and 1 p.m. Dressed in Dickens-style costumes, the troupe will perform holiday and winter music with an Irish twist. Gary Lapow will "Light up the Lights" at Lawrence Hall of Science with two shows Tuesday, Dec. 30, at noon and 1:15 p.m. This popular Bay Area troubadour will present a multi-cultural song festival to mark the holiday season. Kwanzaa's celebration of family and community life will be highlighted at Lawrence Hall of Science, Saturday, Jan. 3, at noon and 1:15 p.m. with music and stories.
