Planning a Tenth Campus

UC Faculty Committee Issues Its Recommendations

The new University of California campus at Lake Yosemite near Merced-the first major research university to be built in the 21st century-will be a world center of electronic technologies and will explore the rich cultures of the San Joaquin Valley.

It will also have a unique interdisciplinary academic structure built around three divisions-social science and public policy, science and technology, and arts and cultures-rather than traditional schools and colleges.

Those are among the recommendations released Nov. 19 by a UC faculty committee. The original recommendations, along with modifications to be made during the review process, will guide the selection of the founding chancellor and the first faculty members, who will develop the campus's complete academic program. The new campus is scheduled to open in 2005, with 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

In developing its recommendations, the committee hosted forums in Merced, Fresno and Bakersfield to hear the views of valley leaders. Members also toured valley communities and participated in legislative hearings on the new campus.

Copies of the committee report are available on the World Wide Web at http://www.ucnewswire.org. For information, contact the UC University Relations office in Fresno at (209) 225-5611.
