Chancellor Berdahl will address the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco Friday, Jan. 23. The title of his speech is: "After Proposition 209: Addressing the Fundamental Issues of Educational Inequity." When California's voters approved Proposition 209 banning the use of race and ethnic preferences, they said admissions decisions to public colleges and universities must be made on a completely level playing field. Given this new reality, says Berdahl, fairness dictates that the playing field be level from the very outset of the schooling process. In his 30-minute speech he will address the need for honest dialog on the issue of race and affirmative action, how Berkeley is broadening its admission process with the entering class of fall 1998, and how we must insist on equal educational opportunities throughout the K-12 years for all California's students. Commonwealth Club speeches are broadcast on several Bay Area public radio
stations, including KQED-FM (88.5) on Fridays at 8 p.m. and Saturdays at
2 a.m. In addition, the text of the speech will be posted on the campus
