FEMA Director Visits Campus;
Confers on Seismic Retrofit

Federal Emergency Management Agency Director James Lee Witt visited campus Thursday, Jan. 22, to discuss Berkeley's seismic retrofit effort, known as the SAFER program.

After a meeting between FEMA and campus officials, Witt toured Memorial Stadium with Chancellor Berdahl. Also on the itinerary was a chemistry laboratory in Latimer Hall.

The visit followed an earlier meeting between Witt and campus officials last October. FEMA's relationship with Berkeley has progressed significantly since that time, with FEMA-Berkeley partnerships on the retrofit design of a campus building and a campus-City of Berkeley economic impact study.

As part of advocacy efforts on this issue, campus's Government Affairs Office solicited support from local members of Congress, who detailed the retrofit's importance and encouraged FEMA participation in a Jan. 16 letter to Witt.

The 10 signatories were Ronald Dellums, D-Oakland; Tom Campbell, R-Campbell; Anna Eshoo, D-Atherton; Tom Lantos, D-San Mateo; Zoe Lofgren, D-San Jose; Robert Matsui, D-Sacramento; Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco; Pete Stark, D-Hayward; Ellen Tauscher, D-Walnut Creek; and Lynn Woolsey, D-Santa Rosa.
