The Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Dependent Care has collected the following information on children’s programs on campus this summer.

UC Summer Enrichment Program for Girls
Five-week enrichment program sponsored by Berkeley to study friendship and social development in girls ages 6-12. Classroom projects, arts and crafts, drama and dance, sports, and computer activities. Daily attendance required (M-F, 8:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m.). Supported by a federal research grant, under the direction of Stephen P. Hinshaw, professor of psychology.

Botanical Garden Summer Day Camp
A summer day camp of three weekly sessions in July to study nature.

Price/Financial Assistance: $125/week. Ten percent discount for two or more children from the same family during the summer.

Academic Talent Development Program
Intellectually challenging summer classes for motivated students in grades K-11.
Elementary Division: For three weeks in July, students in grades K-6 attend classes at a school near Berkeley campus to explore academic subjects not offered at their regular schools.
Secondary Division: 7th to 11th graders come to campus for a six-week summer session for academic acceleration and enrichment.

Young Entrepreneurs at Berkeley
This program of the East Bay Outreach Project at the Haas School of Business is a free, year-long, entrepreneurial training and mentoring program for high schoolers, teaching the basics of starting and running a business.
Dates/Times:
Phase I. July 25-Aug. 8, two-week summer session, including classroom instruction, guest speakers and field trips.
Phase II. September-May. During the school year, participants are paired with MBA graduate student mentors who work with them to complete business plans. After attending additional workshops, participants can present their business plans to the EBOP Venture Capital Board. Successful plans receive startup funding.
Ages: 9th-12th graders from Berkeley, Oakland, Emeryville and Richmond are eligible
Price: No cost. Lunches, curriculum, bus passes as needed, field trips and guest speakers are provided during Phase I. YEB is especially looking for economically disadvantaged and minority youth with good ideas for potential businesses.

Lawrence Hall of Science LHS Science, Math and Technology Day Camps
Half-day morning and afternoon day camps to explore everything from computers to chemistry to crime solving. Lunch-time and late-afternoon programs are available for children in grades 3-6 enrolled in both morning and afternoon camps.

LHS Summer Science Camps
Four week-long residential camps in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Gold Country foothills, Sierra Nevada and Mokelumne Wilderness, combining outdoor science with swimming, hiking, stargazing, crafts and games.

Summer Fun at LHS
This hands-on science center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with interactive exhibits featuring “Whales: Giants of the Deep,” “Papermaking,” “Rock’n’Roll Voices” and more. Daily planetarium shows, live animals to touch and observe in the biology lab, a free computer lab, and special family events each week.

LBL Science Exploration Camp
Offers a mix of recreational and science-oriented activities. First preference will be given to children and grandchildren of LBNL employees, then UC families. Morning science activities are based on weekly themes and will be held at the LBNL, Lawrence Hall of Science and the Botanical Garden. Afternoon recreational activities will take place in local parks.
Dates/Times: July 27-Sept. 4; 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; extended care available from 7:45 a.m.-9 a.m. and 4 p.m.-5:15 p.m.
Price: $160 per week during pre-registration period; $175 afterwards. Includes extended care

MESA Summer Academy
Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement is an academic enrichment program that focuses on math and science.

Ages: Entering 7th-12th grade in fall 1998 (ages 12-17)
