From Chancellor Robert Berdahl

The dedication and scholarship of its faculty more than anything else defines the quality of an institution of higher learning. The high caliber of Berkeley’s faculty is what drew me to the campus and it is what attracts such outstanding students. In this special section, you will be introduced to our newest faculty members. Once again, we have been extremely successful in attracting the finest scholars, researchers and teachers to join us.

Over the past several months I have had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know many of the newest members of the faculty and I have been enormously impressed by their records of achievement, their enthusiasm and their high regard for Berkeley.

As you read through this section, you will see that our campus is being enriched by a wonderful mixture of new talent and of highly esteemed scholars who have chosen to join us from other institutions.

They have come here, in large part, because of the great appeal of working at a public university with students of exciting promise. They have also come to Berkeley for the opportunity to work closely with colleagues of international acclaim.

I have no doubt that they will find here, as I have in my first year, a supportive and dynamic environment in which to advance knowledge. And in doing so, they will join a Berkeley tradition of discovery, contribution and service.

I invite the entire community to join me in welcoming these impressive new men and women to our campus.
