Obituaries Publications		Campus Feedback Sought on Communication Needs What will your department need in communication services five years from now? Which of the new communications technologies will best support your department’s activities? To help answer these and other questions, the Survey Research Center will soon distribute a survey to campus departments on behalf of Communication and Network Services (CNS). The current Pacific Bell contract expires in November and CNS’s survey is step one of a two-year project to evaluate campus communications needs as we head into the 21st century. Additional customer input will be gathered throughout the project. HIV/AIDS Pilot Research Funds Available HIV/AIDS pilot study research funds are available from the UCSF AIDS Clinical Research Center. The application deadline for the next funding cycle is June 1. Deadlines for future funding cycles are Oct. 1, 1998, and March 1, 1999. Applicants can submit studies in basic science, epidemiology, behavioral science, as well as clinical trials. Predoctoral students involved in AIDS research with faculty mentors are also eligible to apply. The project also seeks faculty members who would like to be included in its database of peer reviewers for the program. Peer reviewers confidentially fill out a one-page form briefly addressing the merits of a proposed pilot research project within their field(s) of expertise. Barlow To Talk May 6 On Anxiety Disorders David Barlow, internationally known expert on anxiety disorders, will discuss advances in the treatment of anxiety and panic at 5:30 p.m. May 6 at Tang Center. The free, 45-minute talk, part of National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day, will be followed by 30 minutes for questions from the audience. Local referral sources will be available. Twenty-three million Americans suffer from anxiety disorders. The most common symptoms include excessive worrying, sleep difficulties, panic attacks of uncontrollable intense anxiety, obsessive or ritualistic behaviors, phobias and social anxiety. Barlow is professor of psychology and director of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University. He has published more than 20 books and 300 articles. His talk is sponsored by the Center for Cognitive Therapy of Oakland and San Francisco and Counseling and Psychological Services at University Health Services. International Conference on African Diaspora Studies More than 120 international scholars will participate in the April 30 to May 2 conference “African Diaspora Studies on the Eve of the 21st Century,” to be held in the Lipman Room, Barrows Hall. Beginning April 30 with a series of workshops on curriculum development for African diaspora studies programs, the conference has been organized in celebration of the Department of African American Studies’ new PhD in African American Studies, the nation’s first such doctoral program. Richard Buxbaum, dean of International and Area Studies, and Bernie Grant, a member of the British Parliament, will deliver keynote addresses Friday morning, May 1. “African Diaspora Studies” is free and open to the public. For information call 643-0734. Grants for Minimizing Hazardous Waste Environment, Health and Safety is accepting applications through May 29 for hazardous waste minimization grants. Funds for research and development of new ways to reduce campus hazardous waste are available to faculty, faculty-sponsored students and management. May 2-3 Conference on the Philippines The Center for Southeast Asia Studies will host a two-day conference on “The Philippines: Local and Global Perspectives” the weekend of May 2 and 3 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Co-chaired by David Szanton, executive director of International and Area Studies, and Robert Reed, chair of the Center for Southeast Asia Studies and professor of geography, the conference will take place at the Berkeley Conference Center, 2105 Bancroft Way. Scholars from throughout the United States will join Berkeley colleagues in marking the centennial of the Philippine Revolution. Topics will include Spanish and American colonialism, literature of the Philippine diaspora, Filipino migration to California, migrant Filipina workers, Japanese occupation of the Philippines, the Filipino-American experience and institutionalizing Philippine Studies. Organized by the Center for Southeast Asia Studies in conjunction with the California consortium for Southeast Asian Studies (Berkeley and UCLA), the conference is free and open to the public.
