Historians Investigate Third Reich Business Dealings

Posted January 20, 1999

Among the many atrocities that occurred during Hitler's reign in Germany are the confiscation of Jewish assets and the exploitation of Jewish Labor.

Companies that conducted business in Germany during this time have come under increasing threat of law suits, sanctions and government investigations. Many of these companies have hired historians to help uncover information relevant to these cases.

This places historians in a unique dilemna -- how to serve the needs of their business clients while fulfilling their moral and professional obligations.

Gerald Feldman, director of the Center for German and European Studies, will present "The Business History of the Third Reich and the Responsibilities of the Historian: Gold, Insurance, Aryanization and Forced Labor," Thursday, Feb. 4 at 4 p.m. at Alumni House.

Feldman will discuss how historians are balancing the need to enlighten the public and governemnt officials while working for private corporations. He will explain why these investigations are taking place now rather than closer to the time of the events and will provide an update on current cases.
