Distinguished Teaching Awards
40 Years of Honoring Excellence

By Steve Tollefson, Educational Development -- Student Life
Posted April 14, 1999

Imagine leaving your classroom duties at Berkeley to teach in another country. What's the first thing you do? If you're philosophy professor John R. Searle, you train your students to "act like Berkeley students."

Searle is one of four recipients of this year's Distinguished Teaching Award. Given annually by the Committee on Teaching of the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate since 1959, the award recognizes excellence in teaching at Berkeley. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the award.

In addition to Searle, the other award recipients for 1999 are Anil K. Chopra, civil and environmental engineering; Richard Muller, physics; and Oliver M. O'Reilly, mechanical engineering. They will be honored Thursday,. April 22 at 5 p.m. at a ceremony in Zellerbach Playhouse.

Also honored will be the recipients of the Presidential Chair in Undergraduate Education and the Educational Initiatives Award. The ceremony will include presentations by Berkeley Chancellor Robert Berdahl, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Carol Christ, Academic Senate Chair Robert Brentano, and Alumni Association President Irene Miura.

The public is invited to the ceremony and the reception that follows in the Toll Room of the Alumni house.
