Photo of the Week: A Work in Progress  Major donors to the Hearst Memorial Mining Building project donned hard hats Aug. 13 to tour progress being made on the renovation and seismic upgrade of the historic building. Plans for the new facility include new teaching and research facilities and work to restore and strengthen the elegant Memorial Lobby, pictured here. Funded by the state of California and private gifts, the $68 million project will use base isolators to separate the building's foundation from ground motion in the event of an earthquake. Workers will soon begin transferring the massive structure off its current foundation and onto braces. The load will later be transferred to the new foundation, supported by the isolators. Designed by architect John Galen Howard and completed in 1907, the building was a gift from Phoebe Apperson Hearst in memory of her husband, miner and U.S. Senator George Hearst.
