Comments due May 19 for proposed changes to academic calendar
UC President Richard Atkinson has proposed that the university observe Veterans Day as an official university holiday for staff and faculty, beginning with the 2000-01 academic year.
This would require adding one instruction day to the academic calendar, to provide the required 146 days of instruction.
To avoid crowding an already tight fall semester, it has been proposed that the additional day of instruction be added on the spring. The Berkeley campus would have 71 days of instruction each fall and 75 days each spring. One option is to begin the spring semester one week earlier than in the past; another is to reduce spring exam preparation days to two weekdays.

Mid-day merit bonus program sessions offered by Human Resources
The Office of Human Resources is hosting informational sessions on the 1999-2000 Merit Bonus Program for staff employees. The meetings will be held at 150 University Hall, from noon to 2 p.m. Remaining sessions are Thursday, April 27; Friday, April 28; and Wednesday, May 10.
This year's program is designed to support the chancellor's six goals. Criteria for consideration for a merit bonus, eligibility information, and examples of how employees can support the chancellor's goals will be discussed at the sessions, which are open to all employees.

UC staff and student statistical update is now available on Web
The Statistical Summary of Students and Staff for Fall 1999 -- detailing statistics on students, personnel and degrees conferred at each of the nine University of California campuses and UC Office of the President -- is now available. Among the statistics included are personnel headcount by campus, ethnicity, gender and work status; and enrollment by ethnicity, gender, level and discipline.
The report, produced by UC Office of Information Resources and Communications, is available online at (www.ucop.edu/ucophome/uwnews/stat).
May 5 SUPERB Film Is Pure '70s
The student-run SUPERB Productions' final film of the spring season, "Dazed and Confused,"screens Friday, May 5, in Wheeler Auditorium.
Director Richard Linklater's satirical take on high school life in '70s takes place on the last day of school, somewhere in Middle America in the summer 1976. "Dazed" …is about life during wartime -- the wartime of high school, where the staff is crazy, the parents are clueless and the students are bizarre. Nothing makes sense," wrote the Washington Post.
Show times are 7 and 9:30 p.m. General admission is $4.
New Campus Music At May 3 Noon Concert
New music at Berkeley will be featured at the Wednesday, May 3, in the final event of the Spring 2000 Noon Concerts series. The free concert, which begins promptly at 12:15 p.m. in Hertz Concert Hall, will showcase works by graduate students of Professor Cindy Cox.
