Cal athletes bring home 13 medals in Olympics

With the 2000 Summer Olympics now complete, Cal's Sydney contingent came away with 13 medals.

Cal athletes and alumni captured four gold medals, eight silver and one bronze. In swimming, athletes brought home two golds. Sophomore swimmer Anthony Ervin won a gold and silver. He tied for first to win the 50-meter freestyle, and won a silver medal 400-meter freestyle relay. Sophomore Staciana Stitts won gold in women's 400-meter medley relay, swimming in the qualifying heats.

Cal's other two gold medals came in men's basketball, as former Bears Jason Kidd and Shareef Abdur-Rahim were on the U.S. squad. Rowing, women's water polo and women's soccer provided another seven medals. Former Bear Sebastian Bea took home silver in the men's coxless pair.

The U.S. women's water polo team - including current students Ericka Lorenz and Heather Petri, former player Courtney Johnson and former head coach Maureen O'Toole - won silver medals, falling 4-3 to the host Australians in the final match.

The U.S. women's soccer team included alumnae Joy (Biefeld) Fawcett and Brandi Chastain, who was the National Freshman of the Year at Cal in 1986 before transferring to Santa Clara. After reaching the title match, the Americans fell to Norway, 3-2, in overtime.

Cal athletes completed their medal haul when Chris Huffins took home bronze in the decathlon.

Oct. 20-21: Lost and found surplus auction and sale

Large quantities of eclectic stuff - from jewelry, athletic goods, cameras, bicycles, and typewriters to office and collectible oak furniture - will be sold to the highest bidder Saturday, Oct. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., when Excess, Surplus & Salvage holds its annual lost and found surplus auction.

Most articles will be sold on a lot basis - each lot being offered "as is, where is," with minimum bids established for some lots. A preview of items to be auctioned will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 20.

During the same hours, an assortment of UC surplus items will also be sold in a giant garage sale.

The auction, preview and garage sale will be held at the Marchant Building, 1000 Folger St., two blocks south of the intersection of Ashby and San Pablo avenues. No credit cards will be accepted. For information, call 642-1186 or 642-5374.

Flu shot clinics begin Oct. 18

After warnings of manufacturing difficulties, the flu vaccine has arrived on campus, and the dates for Tang Center's drop-in flu shot clinics are set.

The dates are Wednesday, Oct. 18; Friday, Oct. 20; Tuesday, Oct. 24; Thursday, Nov. 9; and Thursday, Nov. 16. All clinics will be held at the Tang Center, Class of Œ42 Room, from noon to 6 p.m. The cost is $10. The clinics are open to the campus and community.
