Publications 08 NOVEMBER 00 Ethnic Notions Ethnic Notions, a survey of the use of racial stereotype in commercial imagery from 1847 to the present, helps readers understand the deeply embedded roots of the nation's racism. The book has more than 50 illustrations of commercial and folk-art items from the collection of Jan Faulkner, pioneer in the research that led to this book. The items include pencils, candy tins, food items, books, games and toys - all produced by well-known artists and manufacturing companies. Accompanying the illustrations are essays by Leon Litwack, professor of American history; and Theresa Whitener, a Berkeley doctoral candidate studying U.S. history. Published by Berkeley
