06 December 00 | A replica of the campus mascot emerged from a massive log as California artist Ron Smith demonstrated chainsaw sculpture on a Davis Hall patio Nov. 28. The event was the finale to the freshman seminar "Woodsculpting and Related Art." Jerome Thomas, 80, a civil and environmental engineering professor emeritus and an award-winning wood carver, teaches the course on a once-popular and now nearly "lost" American art form. The new bear will be installed in Davis Hall.
