Figures show jump in number of female students enrolled for fall

06 December 00 | Final enrollment figures for fall 2000 undergraduate and graduate students show Berkeley's student body is becoming increasingly female.

Among the highlights of this year's enrollment report is an increase in female students in both the undergraduate and graduate school populations. Female students represent 52.2 percent of the campus's total undergraduate population - the highest female non-wartime percentage ever. There are 11,849 female undergraduates, 10,829 male. And for the first time ever, there are more women than men entering Berkeley as new graduate school students. There are 1,225 males and 1,230 females.

Overall, however, there were no significant enrollment changes compared to last fall. Among the data:

There are 3,735 students in the fall 2000 freshman class, up from 3,618 students in the fall 1999 class. In addition, 1,530 new transfer students came to Berkeley in fall 2000, down from 1,650 in fall 1999.

There are 148 black students in the fall 2000 freshman class, up from 126 last fall. Among Chicano/Latino students, there are 320 in the freshman class, down from 330 last year. There are 20 American Indian students in the fall 2000 class, two fewer than last year.

There are 1,122 white students in the fall 2000 freshman class, up from 1,111 last fall. Among Asian American students - a broad category that includes eight subcategories of ethnicities - there are 1,629 students in the fall 2000 freshman class, up from 1,583 last fall.

Vietnamese students and Filipino students, who are included in the "Asian American" category, continue to make gains in enrollment. There are 151 Vietnamese students in the fall 2000 freshman class, up from 129 in fall 1999, and 98 in fall 1998. Among Filipino students, there are 135 in the fall 2000 freshman class, up from 129 in 1999, and 104 in 1998.

In all, there are 22,678 undergraduate students on campus, down from 22,705 last fall. Among graduate students, 2,455 new graduate students enrolled on campus, up from 2,397 in fall 1999. Overall, there are now 8,599 new and continuing students enrolled in the campus's 102 graduate programs, down from 8,642 last fall.
