Commemorating
Ann Brown
More
than 100 experts and students in the field of education met in Berkeley
Jan. 19-21 for a conference commemorating the life and work of the
late Ann Brown, who was the Evelyn Lois Corey Professor in the Graduate
School of Education.
A
leader in educational innovation who had a profound influence on
scholars and teachers, Brown is best known for her work describing
the classroom as a "community of learners." She died in
June 1999. Participants came from as far as London and Toronto.
Among them, from left, were Brown's husband and collaborator, Education
Professor Joseph Campione; Professors Carl Bereiter and Marlene
Scardamalia of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education; and
Professor Barbara White of the Graduate School of Education.
On Friday evening, the Ann Brown Teacher Research Center was dedicated
at Oakland's Chabot Space and Science Center.
