Conference examines Asian business climate

21 February 2001 | In the wake of devastating financial contractions in 1997-98, many Asian countries have had to grapple with wholesale economic and political reforms aimed at reinvigorating stagnant economies and sustaining national competitiveness. For some, this “crisis” presented an opportunity.

How the Asia region has benefited economically from these reforms and revolutionary changes is the focus of the second annual International Business Conference at the Haas School: “Rising Asia – A New Chapter of Opportunity.” The conference will take place March 3, in the school’s Arthur Andersen Auditorium.

International leaders on the forefront of Asia business will converge from East and West for the conference. Ta-Lin Hsu, chairman of Hambrecht & Quist — Asia Pacific (H&Q’s Asian venture arm), and John Wadsworth, honorary chairman of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Asia Ltd., will be keynote speakers.

Hsu and Wadsworth will address the changing state of capital markets and venture capital from an international perspective. They will share their thoughts on promising sectors of the Asian economy and the repercussions of recent shifts in the U.S. economy.

Breakout panel discussions will include: telecom and wireless; entrepreneurship; e-commerce and localization; capital markets and venture capital; biotechnology; and manufacturing.
