Hellman Family Faculty Fund applications due Feb. 26
The Hellman Family Faculty Fund is accepting applications; the deadline is Monday, Feb. 26.

The fund provides research support for assistant professors who show capacity for great distinction in their research.

This year, $300,000 will be available for awards. Individuals may apply for a grant of up to $50,000; the maximum award granted in the last three competitions was $45,000. In science and engineering, the average grant over this period was $31,500; for the humanities, the average was $12,500.

Awards will be announced in May.

For information, see the Web site of the Office of the Vice Provost, at http://www.chance.berkeley.edu/vprovost, or call Sarah Moulton at 642-1963.

Public forum set on northeast campus building projects
The campus will hold a community meeting on Monday, Feb. 26, to discuss building plans for two new science and technology centers in the northeast section of the campus.

The meeting, hosted by Capital Projects and Community Relations, will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in Sibley Auditorium of the Bechtel Engineering Center.

At the meeting, members of the community will have a chance to review and comment on the projects, as work begins on their environmental impact report.

The campus plans to replace Stanley Hall and an older portion of Davis Hall with two modern and seismically sound research and teaching facilities. The new buildings will bring together interdisciplinary scholars working at the crossroads of the physical and biological sciences and engineering.
The campus’s Health Sciences Initiative and its work through the new California Institute for Bioengineering, Biotechnology and Quantitative Biomedical Research will benefit from the new building on the Stanley site. The work of the proposed Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society would be housed in a building replacing an older wing of Davis Hall.

Correction
In last week’s Berkeleyan, the sponsor of a Feb. 20 panel discussion at Stephens Hall, “Disability and the Arts,” was listed incorrectly. The event was sponsored by the Townsend Center for the Humanities and held in conjunction with the center’s current exhibit of works by developmentally disabled artists at the National Institute of Art and Disabilities. Disability Studies at Cal is sponsoring a spring lecture series on other disability-related topics.
